#2. Accessorize the crap out of a simple look.
Start with a little black dress. The one we accessorized below is great - clean lines, great cut, but nothing “fancy” about it. Purchased at Thrift Town a few years ago for under $10, it will never go out of style. To spruce up an otherwise plain-Jane look, we layered a BUNCH of necklaces.

Whether it’s necklaces, a handful of bangles, huge statement earrings or a jeweled
fascinator in your hair: allow your jewelry (and your personality) to shine.

#3. MAKEUP MAGIC: Looking luxe is about creating focal points and choosing simple bold strokes.

Add a colorful lip while keeping the rest simple, to make it all just a bit more glam.

I found these striking black buckled heels for $4.99 at Thrift Town. At that price, you can afford to get yourself a pair of cute heels to go with your NYE look. Consignment places might not have $5 shoes, but they’re much more curated for modern styles, cutting down your shop time.

#5. PATTERNED PRAISES.

So your dress is simple. And so are your shoes. Who says your LEGS can’t get all the attention for one night? We happen to be a patterned tights fanatics, and honestly, you get more comments on a great pair of polka dotted or plaid tights than an interesting dress. Why? Because it’s unexpected & approachable.

** helpful hint: If you’re going to go a bit out there on legwear, you MUST keep everything else streamlined & simple, or you run the risk of looking cluttered.

#6. PINTERESTING HAIR.

In case you haven’t figured it out yet, you can find a tutorial on pretty much ANYTHING on the amazing interwebs.

#7. GLAM: IN THE BAG.

Throw in that unexpected pop of color with a vibrant clutch. You might be surprised at the adorable clutches you can find secondhand – because they’re such a statement piece, a lot of girls wear them prominently a couple times and trade ‘em in. Score for you!

Clutches (versus a purse/bag) stay with you all night as a part of your look, make it intentional! If not bold, look for a great vintage piece (conversation starter) and be prepared to tell others where you got it locally, cause they’ll be asking! Now you’re fashionable AND smart.

As the fashion retail manager for the new Flywheel Store in Downtown Plaza, it’s important to me that we carry both men’s and women’s apparel and accessories made here in Sacramento. It’s not the easiest task to find quality, handmade, accessible apparel that’s locally made, and unique.

Lucky for you, there’s KingsTribe:
“A ready to wear street gear clothing brand for the revolutionary individual.”

When it comes to details, KingsTribe doesn’t mess around.
They want to make sure you’ve got a piece that stands out while fitting great.

Rounded cut in the front, single red sleeve, custom embroidery and
collar cut for bowties & ties. Yeah. No one else will have this shirt.

We don’t have the camo print bowtie, bag or pants in stock at
Flywheel yet, but if you want ‘em, we’ll get them for you.

Speaking of unique. This cardigan killed at Sac Fashion Week.

The grey collared shirt has the same rounded cut as the tan/red. Both with adjustable cuff
sizes and collars cut specifically to accomodate bowties & ties. Which we also carry.

These pants are the piece that caught my eye from the runway convincing me we HAD to have
KingsTribe at Flywheel. Posting on Instagram this past ManlyMonday, and thy were quite a hit.

KingsTribe Designer Samuel Parkinson pursued fashion at a design school right here in Sacramento,
and has grown his company since 2009 to now encompass both men’s and women’s apparel.

High waisted, dropped crotch, taffeta skinnies. No one else will have these.

This top has color and style. Unique buttons, and lightweight
to wear layered or on its own as things heat up.

Each year, an ever-increasing number of men, women and their families are joining the award-winning Walk a Mile in Her Shoes: The International Men’s March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault & Gender Violence. Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is a playful opportunity for men to raise awareness in their community about the serious causes, effects and remediations to sexualized violence.

This year, the event is Saturday May 4, and we’ve already got 14 guys on our team.
We are proud to once again take part in WEAVE’s Walk a Mile in Her Shoes Event here in Sacramento, taking a stand against domestic violence.

HIPHOP CROCKER ART.

Hip-hop music and The Crocker Art Museum go together like caviar and fried chicken. Both great in their own rite, just notsomuch together… Until this past week that is.

We love The Crocker, and the recent fresh outlook they have on connecting with all of Sacramento, not just their typical museum-goers. As a stylist team, our clients this past week were the Sacramento based hiphop group, Project4Trees.

P4T released their first album last summer, and were ready to shoot their first music video. Through a very grand gesture and vote of confidence, The Crocker Art Museum offered to allow the group to shoot their music video on site inside the museum. YEAH. There’s a first time for everything.

Now we’re cookin. Amazing venue: check. Talented band: check. Stylist Team: check. Professional video production crew: Sac-based Franklin Pictures. They brought their state-of-the-art equipment, killer crew and intense skill to the 17 hour video shoot day. Yeah. 17 hours. #respect #workethic

The “Stylist Crew”: JJ for the dressier looks, and Racks Boutique for the casual looks.

Racks Boutique is new to Midtown (HI! Welcome! We love you!!), but it’s owner, Rachel certainly isn’t. This girl KNOWS her stuff, and the shop is a visual translation of her ecclectic penchant for mad style. Simultaneously vintage and trendy, I dare you to walk in and not find something you can’t live without.

The amazing Rachel (@rachelonia on IG) offered to put together the more casual of the 2 looks for the guys from her shop, and holy crap they looked legit.

OUR LOOK:
With a modest (like, Amish modest) budget per look, and 4 distinct personalities, we had our work cut out for us. But heaven forbid we shy away from putting a look together for pennies: There’s a reason they called us. In the end, each member ended up with a look that they felt confident in, and were able to rock (hip-hop?) in the video.

After a long hard day, I finally snagged 3 of the 4 guys to get outfit shots… So here’s a look at all the makings of a legit music video.

Not only did they get to film the whole video at The Crocker, but we were all invited back to debut the video for all of Sacramento at the big Local Love event at the Crocker on Valentine’s Day.

Go ahead: Infuse bold color into your cold-weather wardrobe.

This week’s look is sweet and comfortable, while still drawing attention with bold color. We started with the dress & added accessories based on the colors in the dress pattern. The objective: look ultra feminine while staying warm.

Every girl should have a great pair of cowgirl boots.
Finding a cranberry pair for under $5 is a shopping victory.
PS: Thigh-high sweater socks are perfect for pairing with maxi’s in winter.

New Zoya gold polish is our latest beauty obsession via GlossyBox. The perfect subdued &
shiny color for this look, and hasn’t chipped or peeled after a week! Thanks to darling Emily

When shopping secondhand, once you check for major imperfections, the real deal is in the details.
Stitching, construction, color consistency: make sure it’s up to snuff. Building a wardrobe of well-made
pieces with delightful details (for less) is one of the main perks of shopping secondhand.

Going on 5 years with these boots and they’re still a favorite find.

RESOLUTE – 5 WAYS TO STEP IT UP.

NOT-SO-NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS.

It’s a little over half way through January, and if you’re like me, a good chunk of your resolutions have gone by the wayside.

Let’s just start over (January 1st is just a date, not a mandate), and get your personal style on track with a couple basic resolutions that you can thank me for later.

Resolution No. 37:

If I haven’t already, I will find a good tailor. And I will listen to him.

I may just say this every Manly Monday: it’s very possibly more about how your clothes are tailored than what you choose to buy.

An ill-fitting $3000 suit still looks silly. I have guys ask me all the time where to find a tailor or just whine that they can never find stuff that fits them well. I refer them to my tailor & have a sneaking suspicion that most of them don’t ever get around to it. DO IT already!

Once you have a collared shirt that fits like it was made for you, you’ll wonder how you ever wore the slouchy stuff off the rack.

This is my tailor Erik, wearing a suit & shirt he altered.
He truly loves his craft & is a perfectionist with every garment he touches.

As Erik is now in SF, a local Sacramento tailor that comes highly recommended is:

Resolution No. 52:

I will dispose of any clothing I haven’t worn in two years,
and everything that straight up doesn’t fit me.

If it was left behind by a roommate, an unwanted gift from a pushy female in your life, or is falling apart at the seams: get rid of it.

If it’s trendy and in good shape, but just not your personal style, consider consigning it. Store credit or cash are a nice way to start out on wardrobe changes.

LOCAL SPOTS FOR GUY CONSIGNMENT-
Article Consignment and Freestyle .

Both have great guy’s sections with everything sorted by size & type. Worst case scenario: you buy some cool new stuff, but they don’t take any of your old stuff.

Resolution No. 70:

I will find a suit that fits me well by shopping smart.

As much as you DO need a good tailor in your life, you can alleviate a lot of your high-end fitting woes by simply knowing how to buy a suit that fits you well from the get-go. In the meantime, pull out the untailored suits you already have & see Resolution #37. Please don’t wear them out again until you do.

Resolution No. 22:

I will experiment with accessories I’ve never tried.

So maybe you’ve never been a hat kinda guy. That’s ok. What about wearing a tie when you’re not wearing a suit? It might be time to branch out a little on accessories.

Up you style points: Accessorize by adding a long scarf, or a skinny tie, a cool new belt, a bright colored pocket square or a thick leather watch band. Not sure how to do that?

Resolution No. 86:

I will not fall for cheap haircuts, Walmart-brand ANYTHING, or other false bargains.

My Walmart soapbox aside, many of you are under the unfortunate understanding that going to a stylist over a barber makes you unmanly. Truth is – there’s a marked difference in how refined you look, and how much style you have when you have an actual stylist in charge of your look versus someone who just graduated beauty school wielding a trimmer with only 3 different length combs to choose from. If you’re wanting to have an actual sense of style about you, SuperCuts is not your friend.

Whether it’s something tame or abstract – it’s all about quality over economy. You will pay more at a stylist. Get over it. When you’re paying $7 for a haircut – you get exactly what you pay for. But don’t go to just any stylist – just cause someone’s good at cutting hair doesn’t mean they’re great at styling GUY hair. Someone I know IS great at guy hair & helping you figure out a good style for you is Ali at Deeda. Or really, any of the incredible stylists at Deeda. Call them & try something new, or get your usual cut, just done way better.

The mission of Reece’s Rainbow is to rescue orphans with Down Syndrome through

This is my beautiful adopted sister Alex. She is the light of our lives, the most loving human
being I’ve ever met. We couldn’t imagine life without her, much less the life she might have had
if she hadn’t been adopted. We want other kids with Downs Syndrome to have that chance.
