DRESS KARMA.
FOURTH-HAND FOR THE WIN.
Late last year, I was invited to a special event in LA, and needed an equally special dress to wear. I contacted one of my fave local shops here in Sacramento, Vintage YSJ, and asked if I could come pick out something & borrow it for the event/weekend.
I only tried on one dress. It was clearly for me. And as an added bonus, the dress is an original by a local designer, Velvet Leaf.
Local shop + secondhand + local designer = WIN.
With it’s vibrant color, low-cut back, bubble skirt and double bow detailing on the back, I was seriously in love with this dress. At an event with almost 2,000 in attendance, my date (my handsome brother) & I were awarded best-dressed couple of the night, and I was on cloud nine.
When the weekend was over, I headed back to YSJ to return the dress with a heavy heart. Of course I wanted to buy it, but just couldn’t afford a $70 dress right before Christmas. I thanked the girls, & said goodbye, hoping someone else would give it a good home & have some fun times in it.
. . . .
Fast forward 8 months to this July, I am aimlessly flipping through the racks at the Goodwill store near my house in Carmichael. I see a flash of pink and the double straps, and am sure it’s a mirage.
But sure enough, there’s my beloved $70 designer dress
(the exact one!) on a rack at Goodwill for $5.99!!
I stood stunned for a minute and checked the label. No mirage. Crazy to think, someone bought the dress in Midtown, wore it, and donated it to Goodwill, where it ended up 5 minutes from my house on the racks at Goodwill. Incredible! I did a spazzy full-body happy dance right there in the store, and called my brother to tell him of my insanely good fortune. I feel like the karma of promoting secondhand and local has come full-circle in the form of a little pink dress.
Now happily in my closet, my blushing fourth-hand dew drop of designer lovliness is just waiting for another event to make an entrance.
Reunited, and it feels SO good.
HARAJUKU DO YOU LOVE?
Well, HELLO JJ loves –
I’m hoping you read my post yesterday on the upcoming night of awesome fashion that is the Bill Cunningham documentary viewing/trunkshow/blogger panel… You’re coming, right??
In the theme of yesterday’s revelries…my perusing of and obsession with street fashion has lead me to the mecca of street fashion: Harajuku.
Harajuku is the world famous district in Japan where boys and girls alike come dressed in usually pretty outrageous outfits and promenade down the streets. In Harajuku, the streets really are runways. And on these runways, anything goes.
I am pretty much in a Harajuku phase myself, I have been on the lookout for perfect pieces to create my ensembles, and this past Sunday at the Antique Faire with Kari, we found …. well you’ll see.
So much fun. And yes, please, if you have enough creativity to put something that awesome together, wear it ANYWHERE.
Here are some pictures of some of my favorite Harajuku street styles:
This isn’t for a parade, festival or party. They really do wear this in everyday life. Awesome right?
What I love about street fashion is it’s right there in front of you – it’s real, tangible, relatable. It’s not some paper thin model photoshopped out the wazoo. Street fashion is what makes our world colorful, vibrant, unique and beautiful. Even if I wasn’t in a harajuku phase, I’d still be inspired by people living & dressing out loud like this.
People might mock the goths and the punks and the hippies and the gangsters and the hipsters and the “weirdos”, but just think about what a bland world it would be if none of them existed. It takes a lot of guts to wear something different. It can be pretty overwhelming at times. So when I see people like the Harajuku girls/guys seriously not giving a flip what anyone thinks and wearing whatever they want, no matter how crazy it is, I really want to thank them for having the courage to be different.
Pretty wild, huh?
I really do believe that when you are dressed up, even if the outfit is just mildly out of the ordinary, you become a living, breathing, moving piece of art that spreads beauty to the people around you. When I see someone who looks really nice or just interesting, it makes me really happy. I always try to compliment those people.
I’ve actually started loving street style even more than runway fashion. Clothes in magazines and on runways are really beautiful and do inspire me a lot. But on the streets, you see originality and style personality. And that inspires me even more. And as you know, just because we don’t live in Harajuku central, doesn’t mean we don’t have awesome street style here, too. For great street fashion right here in Sac, be sure to check out Sacramento’s own street style blog.
And feel free to also drop by my personal blog: Let It Reign!
{ What’s the best look you’ve seen on the street? What’s the wildest thing you’ve worn out in public on a normal day? }
Be chic, be unique. Skylar
THINGS I LOVE THURSDAY – MAD FOR PLAID
Plaid is fun. It’s one of those patterns that you can put on almost anything & it instantly ups the cute-factor.
Starting from the bottom up: I LOVE plaid shoes! Boots, flats, wedges, almost no shoe that couldn’t be a bit more adorable with Plaid.

These are some of my favorite shoes – $3.00 at Thrift Town. Carefree & easy to throw on & go, with a load of personality
.

.
Boots + Plaid + Buttons = crave.
.
.
.
.
.

All plaid is not created equal. or red.
$1.50 @ Goodwill Industries.
.
.
.
.
I get so many compliments when I wear these tights! I can wear all black (or any color!) with these. They add so much spunk.
.
.
.
.
.
.
A little dressier, but still totally functional for being out & about. The velvet ribbon is the perfect touch.
Also only $3.00 @ Goodwill.
.
.
It’s not often you see plaid shirts done up dressy-like, but it works.
I stumbled on this girl’s blog: Indiana Adams, and it’s great! She has so many awesome outfits – I’m totally inspired.
.
.
.
Whether it’s a cute little bag like this, a clutch or a gigantic tote, this is a great way to add plaid to an otherwise plaid-less look. It doesn’t have to match, it doesn’t even have to be the only pattern in the outfit.
They are easy to find at Thrift stores. Promise. This one was $3.75 @ Thrift Town.
.
Don’t be afraid of big bold plaid. It’s not just your mom’s catholic-school girl uniform plaid that’s being seen around town.
Pink, purple, blue, green – GO FOR IT! I wore this during the super hot weather & am happy to get to transition it with boots & leggings, scarves, long sleeve tops…. I could get lost in cold weather clothes. YAY Fall!
This Roxy dress: $4.75 @ Goodwill Industries.
As if that’s not great enough- it’s got BIG pockets!
.
.
Moving on up: sassy & fun. I’m guessing this would be really easy to make…girl’s project night anyone??
.
.
To me, dressing with personality has so much to do with the details. It’s amazing the things you find on Etsy. I usually am just inspired & figure out a way to make things on my own. My friends may be getting Juniper James plaid bobby-pins for Christmas. : )
Plaid isn’t just great for wearing on your body – outfit your place with it too!
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
There’s almost no item easier to find at a Thrift Store than dishes. I’ve found complete sets, but it’s great to have fun projects like this where you can find individual pieces to add flair to your living spaces.
Well, I don’t know about you, but I’m in plaid heaven right about now. Tickled with the stuff I have, craving the stuff I don’t. : )
And what’s even better – tomorrow’s FRIDAY! Hope you had a fabulous week!
xoxo – Kari for JJ
THANKFUL THRIFTING THURSDAY.
I usually write a Thrifting How-Tuesday post every week.
It SO didn’t happen. It’s been kind of crazy town around here with returning to my now re-available job this week. So instead of Thrifting How-Tuesday & Things I Love Thursday, we’re mixing it up. Cool?
I may just announce my love for Fall in every single post I do til it’s clearly the dead of winter. Cause I’m SO excited for it to be cold outside!

THINGS I LOVE THURSDAY.
THE CURRENT EDITION.
I do a lot of themes, but basically I love my life, friends and the things going on RIGHT NOW. Here’s some of my bliss. Things I love:

– LOCAL DESIGNERS. This is a piece from Jesus Medrano, who sells his line through my friends / coworkers Meshugga Chic. He’s got a great eye for design, a weakness for luxurious fabric & is pretty stinkin funny too.
I’m looking forward to his next line that will be a bit more accessible, Sacramento fashion. I’ll keep you posted!

– COMMUNITY GARDENS. I’ve been able to be a part of starting, planting, & maintaining a community garden with good friends for the better part of this year. It is such a unique experience to come together, be in tuned with nature, life cycles, providing food for the people around you & cultivating relationships through gardening.

I was out yesterday laying mulch around our boxes, harvesting the last of our summer crops & pulling everything else out to get ready for Winter planting. It was so gratifying to see things we’d planted at the end of their cycle, & collecting their seeds for next summer planting. If you’re interested in getting involved with a community garden or even starting one — please venture over to my article, “RIPE”.

Liz wearing her creation.
GIRL TIME. boys are nice and all, but there’s nothing quite like hanging out with a great group of girls!
Last night at the Hive, we had our first monthly installment of Scraps ‘n Sh!t – a girl’s craft night. With a fun feather theme, yummy wine & tons of craftiness to go around, it was a great night!

Samantha, Anna, Jeannine, Olga, Anna(again), Ashley, Monica, Janna, Ashley (again), Liz & I had a fabulously crafty time. I got so many creative ideas! I may have to go get a whole new thing of feathers & recreate all of their prettiness. : )
MY FRIENDS’ KIDS. I don’t have kids of my own, but I’ve been realizing more & more how blessed I am to be a part of the lives of my friends’ kids. They are so precious & full of life. Makes me look forward to that phase of my life, knowing I’ll have the friends who will be a part of my kids’ journey as well.
MY CRAZY FAMILY.
Me & little sister.
Other gems: The soundtrack to my work days, random phone calls from old friends, feeling like I’m getting somewhere, mojitos, my brothers, gummy sharks, huge old chalk boards, Jason on DJ duties, my cell block-walks, BonFML, Wednesday Night friends, Janna’s outfits, new music, repurposing old clothes & furniture, meeting twitter friends in person… & my brothers. Did I mention how much I love them?
What do YOU love??

THINGS I LOVE THURSDAY
There are so many ways to accessorize an outfit.
Mix it up! Think outside the box and beyond traditional function. Be crafty & love what you wear!

Every time I wear these earrings I get a ton of compliments. Part stained-glass, part paint-by-number – they go with everything! And I love how funky they are.
It’s good to have earrings (and other pieces too) that have multiple colors to have more versitility in pairing them with your outfit.

I was feeling restless & creative last night so I decided to make a new necklace pendant. Here’s my crafty supplies.

And the results of my craftiness. I love it.
Just secured all the feathers together with thread, then wrapped it with ribbon, looping the ring through. Instant pendant sweetness.

Old hat pins can double as regular pins and pull in just one color from the rest of the look. Usually your accent color. Love the Vintage feel!

I’ve been looking for a great silver cuff forever, & finally found this one yesterday (!) at Forever21 ($3.80) and it’s a bit more flexible so it can be shaped to fit any size wrist.
This is my assistant, Nikki. She’s thrilled about all of this.

So these are my personal glasses. Because I’m blind. But every thrift store I’ve been in has a bin full of old glasses/sunglasses. Some of them are actually pretty vintage/retro-awesome. It’s a simple way to add a little FUN to your FACE. : )
I called around this morning, and the general rate is around $30 to get perscription lenses knocked out and replaced with clear glass. Which, if you think about it, you can easily spend that at Paesanos. Mmmm, pizza…

I found these little gems (pun intended) joined at the stem at a tiny little thrift store in Santa Cruz forever ago. I used all the search engines I know of (even googled search engines. ha) trying to find out what this kind of accessory is called.
They had 2 gold chains of varying lengths joining them & they have a somewhat clip-on-earring function (+ strong teeth for gripping fabric). Used for joining together the front of a sweater or sinch something in the back.

So, this is one option for wearing these little lovelies. But because of their awesome grip, they can also be used to dress up the top of a plain pair of heels or flats too.
Don’t be afraid to experiment with fun jewelry. Mix it up and keep it interesting. Keeping it vintage – even better!
Hope you’re having a glitzy Thursday… : )

* FFFFOUND.COM: is a free web service that not only allows the users to post and share their favorite images found on the web, but also dynamically recommends each user’s tastes and interests based on personalized bookmarking features. Mark images you love, and it will begin suggesting others for you.

As diverse as people can possibly be, you’ll see it on ffffound.com. Even having an idea of things I liked, I was pleasantly surprised by the unique variety of images, and ended up tagging pictures I wouldn’t have considered searching out for myself. LOVE this site.
Stephen was born to be a photographer. His work is stunning – he has an eye for making the everyday moments extrordinary.I like that a lot of his pictures don’t come across posed, but like he stepped into a slice of that person’s life and caught it.
His high color shots are some of the most striking of the hundreds of wedding & engagement shoots I’ve seen. I love that the pics featured here were all engagement shots done at the California Train Museum. I never would have thought to go there for the shoot, but they’re beautiful and unique.

I wish I’d known Stephen when I was getting married.

THINGS I LOVE THURSDAY – TV EDITION
TV edition:
* So You Think You Can Dance!
(PLEASE do not confuse with Dancing with the Stars…tragic & ridicules.) With a few exceptions, I am fascinated by people who do what they do well. Whether it be a UFC fighter who dominates, a painter, a singer, a dancer,
wakeboarder, you name it. So, I’ve never really been one who was “into dance”, but that’s possibly because I haven’t been exposed to GOOD dancers. These kids are unbelieveable. They’ve been nominated for 4 Emmys and counting. The skill, talent, passion and raw strength it takes to be THAT good blows me away. It’s captivating. Try it, you’ll be hooked.
Airs: Wednesday & Thursday nights on FOX 40 @ 8PM.
* How I Met Your Mother.
In the post-90′s sitcom slump, where reality tv rules, I’m happy to watch a legitimately funny sitcom. The story is technically the main character Ted relaying to his now teenage kids the ups, downs and all the stories leading up to how he met their mother. But it’s more just 5 friends navigating life, love and dating together. Sounds like, well, Friends. That’s great, since I loved Friends.
All the characters are funny, but Neil Patrick Harris (Dougie Howser) pulls it all together with awesome laugh-out-loud one liners. There’s some hilarious ongoing jokes that are funny no matter how many times they do it, since you end up feeling like they’re all your friends. Rent the first season on DVD and you’ll be excited to catch up to the current episodes that are airing now.
Airs: Mondays on CBS @ 8PM.
* Dirty Jobs.
Mike Rowe is so charming and hilarious as he tackles the absolute nasiest jobs you can possibly imagine (and
many you can’t). He dives in to any gross job with a smile on his face, relaying to the audience the smell, feel and sometimes taste of the disgusting situation, with respect to the men & women who actually do the job on a daily basis.
Check here for when episodes are airing on the Discovery Channel.
* Cash Cab.
This is my interactive, silly obsession. I don’t watch it by myself. It’s on my DVR only to be watched with others (remote in hand for quickly pausing after the question is asked). The host, Ben Bailey has a great personality. He drives his cab around New York City, picking up people hailing his cab, then offers them the oppurtunity to be on his trivia tv show while they ride to their destination. They win cash unless they get 3 wrong, then they’re kicked out.
At home, we keep score, make up our own rules on valid variations on answers, and generally fuel the fierce competitive spirit of the house. Visiting friends beware. :)
Check here for when episodes are airing on the Discovery Channel.
* What shows do you LOVE?? Tell me why I should tune in…

THINGS I LOVE THURSDAY!
This is where I tell you about products, shops, ideas and things that just light up my day. Hopefully it brightens yours a bit.
————————————————————————————-
- Weatherstone! Nothing like walking into a coffee shop where people know your name & the best way to make your drink. They also happen to have awesome food there – the breakfast sandwich is the best way to start a day.
- Meeting cute animals & their friendly owners out in public.

little fuzzy faces on the cat food isle in Safeway...
- Liz Franco’s Blog : it is here that I not only derive at least 1 smile & laugh a day but also was inspired to start Things I Love Thursday (with her permission of course). I TOTALLY need her to help me make over my page, cuz hers is SO cute!
- Costume parties! (see previous post…) I think costume parties help us all feel a little less adult & responsible for an evening. A chance to be someone else, do something else, and possibly talk with a silly accent (always a plus!).
- This cute bag on Etsy – only $18!
: It’s not only for the baking-challenged (such as myself) but also for those who love new, fresh takes on food. She finds people from all over who have come up with innovative & delicious (usually adorable!) ways to make, present or enjoy your favorite baked things. She’s very thorough and gives step by step instructions for everything with pictures to guide you. This is what I need!!
- KALEB HIGGINS: This guy’s art is awesome! He does portraits of public figures, alive & dead, on old vinyls (along with regular canvas portraits). I have a couple whole walls full of his stuff here at THE URBAN HIVE, and they’re sweet!

lovers, speak!
