EVENT-FUL

GETTIN IT.

{ WHIRLWIND WONDERFUL. }

We care a lot about building community, and are stoked that that’s our full-time job. We’ve been MIA here on the site, but that’s cause we’ve been pretty much everywhere else, out in the community, connecting the locals with each other.

Seriously, this past month has been straight-up CRAZYtown. We have a lot to catch you up on, but (in shorthand) the busy-busy-bee-ness basically consisted of:

  • Big photoshoot for Midtown Business Association ad.
  • Wrangling/Teaching/Enjoying our three awesome interns (love. them.)
  • Raising funds / awareness / participating in the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes
charity fundraiser, where our intern Connor walked in gold heels to represent.
  • Style Your Sole event at Good Stock.
  • Coming on as the official Sacramento Rep for Nakate. (!!)
  • Being the vendor coordinator for LAUNCH 2012 (Did you hear Chromeo is playing?!)
  • Styling 2 TV spots for Good Day Sacramento.
  • Building our new site – still a ways off, but going to be pretty freaking rad. AAAAND,
  • Switching over to our new FAN PAGE on Facebook. (like. us.)

WHEW. So that’s all. For the most part.

Hoping to keep you more updated & get all the pics (from everything!) up soon.
For now – Like us on FB, follow us on Instagram, Twitter & Pose (username juniperjames),
Email us about being a vendor for Local Fashion HELPS, or LAUNCH,

….and have a great weekend!

PREPARE TO LAUNCH.

MUSIC, ART, DESIGN, FASHION.
SACRAMENTO STYLE.

There will be much more official info to come BUT
we want to make sure you know it’s a-comin’:
LAUNCH is now in it’s 4th year here in Sacramento,
and we here at Juniper James are pretty stinking proud
to be returning as the vendor coordinator for the (now week-long!) festival this July.

[ Check out LAUNCH 2011 under JJ EVENTS ]

Those of you who came, or just had a spot as a vendor in prior years know what an incredible event this is. I’ll have the details later (soon) but this is your official head’s-up. Email me if you’re interested in being one of our vendors. I know everyone says “space is limited, act now”, but honestly, I only have 25 spots, and they’re going to go FAST. Last year I had shop owners calling me all the way up to the morning of Launch asking if there is any possible way to get a spot, cause they didn’t take me up on it months ahead of time.

There’s potential to work together & share spaces, so consider that too, if you’re a smaller boutique or designer and don’t need as much space but still want to be involved.

Send me an email at kari.shipman@gmail.com ASAP to let me know
you’re interested and I will contact you personally when I have everything nailed down.

Can’t wait to fill you in as the exciting details of LAUNCH 2012
are allowed to be public. This is seriously going to blow you away.

XO K for JJ & Crew

PICTURE PERFECT.

TYLER & CHRISTINA. <3

At Juniper James, we do EVENTS. Maybe you’ve heard.

We met Tyler & Christina (with M Portraits Photography) a long time ago at an Art Auction event for KVIE, and then again at Sac Fashion Week. They took a shot of Kari & Connor and when it hit the web, we were amazed at how great it looked and asked them to cover our ARTBIKE Party. So excited that they agreed.

When we got the pictures back, we were amazed. They look great, period.
But considering they shot at Hot Italian with the challenging light – we’re so impressed.

In addition to GREAT shots, working with Tyler & Christina:

  • they are super friendly & easygoing
  • you  have 2 people who are both talented, and used to working together.
  • they put your event attendees at ease.
  • multiple shots of everything ensures good  pics of important guests.
  • accommodating to event planner and shots needed.
  • final pictures sent over in a timely fashion & concise format.

And as much as we love doing events and seeing everyone there…. Social media-ly speaking: if an event is great, well attended and there are no pictures, did it really happen? If there are pictures, and they’re not good ones, it’s almost worse.

Fashion thrives on photos, as do events. And sure, you can throw a rock and hit a “photographer”, but when it comes to great images of something that’s important to you, good pictures are paramount.

We are so happy to have found Tyler & Christina
and highly recommend them to capture your special event.

Check out our ARTBIKE Event page to see the pics from our event,
and visit M Portraits Photography on FB.

MANLY MONDAY: CYCLE CENTRIC.

We’ve had a cycle-centric last couple of weeks as we prepared to throw
the ArtBike Party at Hot Italian (last Thursday, pics coming soon!)
& NAHBS Show at the Convention Center (last Friday-Sunday).
While partying & conference-ing it up, we met some great guys
and found some notable cycling apparel companies as well.

______________________________________________________________

RAPHA

In a sea of spandex, khaki cargo pants and comfy sweaty t-shirts at the NAHBS convention, a well-dressed man definitely stood out. I perked up when I saw a guy wearing a GREAT pair of well-fitted dark denim jeans.

But they weren’t just any jeans – they were cuffed with reflector strips on the inside.
Wait, STYLISH cycling pants? No way.

Rapha does carry top of the line spandex etc for serious cyclists,
but we’re most excited about the handful of commuter friendly pieces, like this jacket.

rapha website //  rapha on fb

______________________________________________________________

CYCLELOGICAL GEAR: “bicycle commuter gear & ideas.”

Now THIS is a men’s commuter shoe! wow. As a fashionable guy, you can ride to work in the shoes you want to wear AT work, with the clips built in, but not sticking out. I held and looked closely at these shoes, and they are gorgeous, well-made men’s shoes, period.
They also happen to work great on a bicycle. They will be a bit pricey once available later this month, but if you’re that guy with a corporate job who still wants to ride his bike to work, this is the shoe for you.

______________________________________________________________

Christian Utzman- SF resident, cyclist & avid thrifter.

We met Christian while working the NAHBS convention, and just loved his style.
When he walked in to pick up his bike, I knew almost immediatey which was his.
Stylishly co-ordinated, Christian and his bike are obviously meant to be together.

When asked where he got his whole ensemble, he replied, “All secondhand.” Really?! I need to thrift in SF more! He took the basic black jacket and added the custom buttons and patches. Very steampunk cycle chic. Great meeting you, Christian! Maybe we’ll come thrift in SF with you sometime.

For tons of coverage on the incredible bikes and companies from the NAHBS convention:

And last but not least, on this Manly Monday,
a HUGE thank you to two men we’re super proud
to have in our community: Rick Houston & Steve Rex.

Rick is our local cycling advocate who single-handedly got NAHBS to choose Sacramento
for their venue city this year (a once-yearly show!). Not only did he get them here but he then
volunteered his time to run all the volunteers and most of everything else for NAHBS.
Tons of time, effort, planning, blood, sweat & tears on his part made NAHBS a success.
(Rick pictured w/ Kari @ NAHBS/ Artbike planning meeting.)
Steve Rex is our local master frame builder, this year celebrating 25 years in the business here in Sacramento. ( Rex Cycles on FB ) He does so much for our community and the cycling community at large, and happens to make one hell of a bike.
We’re so proud of both men, and thankful for their contributions to Sacramento.
Thanks for an incredible show!

PARTY TIME!

ART. BIKES. PARTY.

If you like any of those things, you’re going to want to join us this weekend. What’s all this partying about? You may remember the Velo & Vintage Fashion Show we worked on for a couple years. Well, through our involvement, we made a lot of great friends in the local cycling scene, and have now teamed up with them to help put on a FABULOUS weekend….

TOMORROW NIGHT we’re kicking off a crazy awesome weekend at Hot Italian by celebrating the LOCALS who bring so much pizzaz to the cycling scene with their artistic creations.

Why are we gathering the locals and celebrating? Well, the North American Handmade Bicycle Show is coming to the Sacramento Convention Center, March 2-4 (Friday-Sunday), and we are honored to be hosting this impressive international show here in Sac.

Visit the NAHBS FB Page for the hookup (or the NAHBS Website) on all the details and how to buy your tickets to see these incredible handmade artistic bicycle creations.

And come on out to the party tomorrow night at Hot Italian!
We’ll have free pizza (and you know it’s SO GOOD!!)
Artbikes to see, and a photobooth to capture the fun of the night.

Visit our EVENT PAGE, RSVP and we’ll see you there!

CREATE IN CAL SUCCESS

We had our event last night, and I have to say THANK YOU – It was a huge success!

Thank you to HOT ITALIAN for hosting us,
our vendors for bringing their awesomeness,
and all of you for attending!

We intentionally planned it on a Tuesday, knowing everyone’s weekends in December were probably spoken for a month ago, and the crowds delivered! The show of support for (and from!) the locals was overwhelming. The place was PACKED for most of the night – people shopping, eating, drinking and getting to know each other.

{thanks to Justin from Good Stock Boutique for snapping this shot of the crowd!}

Everyone enjoyed the variety of products to shop, and how wonderful all the vendors are to chat with. And I have to say, each vendor was hand-picked, as someone I personally respect, and want to further their business. I’m so happy that translated into such a positive environment at the event. We were feelin’ the love.

BUSINESS : PERSONAL.

Over the next couple weeks, we’re going to be drastically revamping our site and part of that process is vendor & shop pages. Each one of our vendors last night (as well as a ton of other local lovelies) will soon have their very own Juniper James Page! On the vendor pages,  you can not only get pertinent shopping info & get connected to their stuff, but also get to know the people behind the magic.

Pictures of the product/shop are important, but to us, so is knowing who the owner is, and why they love what they do.

We feel that a vital part of creating community is making business personal. There’s something special about walking into a shop, being able to shake the owner’s hand, and know they’ll send you an email when they get something in they think you’d like. Building relationships in the community is important. We’ve got some amazing people doing business in our little city, and we can’t wait to introduce them to you!

We talk about a lot of shops here, but we want to make it official & easy to digest.
We’re going to be featuring a shop every week as we add their shop page to the site.

ANTIQUE-APALOOZA.

love.

SUNDAY. OVERLOAD.

We told you all that this weekend was going to be awesome, and we weren’t kidding. I feel like I need a weekend now – I’m exhausted! We had the Antique Faire + the Fringe Blogger Lot Sale today… and honestly, just that was enough. 9am-3pm was full of antiques, vintage, ooh’s & aah’s.

It was so great to see so many people out supporting local. Christmas shopping was on the forefront, and many-a choice gift was bought. The bloggers, shops & stylists were out in full-force at the lot sale at Fringe, and all of them buying from each other!

The usual partners in antique-ing crime: (L-R)
Melody Stone {of It’s All Happening} &
Skylar Mundy {of Let It Reign}

We took the day in rounds… antique faire (side one), lot sale, Pancake Circus, lot sale, antique faire (side two). Seemed there was an exceptional amount of awesome stuff to peruse this month, and SO many people to chat & catch up with!

Here’s a slideshow of our fan-freakin-tastic day.

THRIFTING HOW-TUESDAY: For Art’s Sake.

an ART-FIT

We all want it to be fall already, and the calendar says it should be, BUT we live in California. My bestie runs the Arts & Business Council, and invited me as her date to the KVIE Art Auction Event the other night. But at 97 degrees out, there was no way I was going to wear the boots and cashmere sweater I wanted to.

So I decided to hold on to the last little bit of summer sun and wear a vibrant sun dress. I made it a little less summer-y by accenting it with black accessories. It was great taking in all the local art, seeing artist friends, delicious food & wine…*sigh* Good night.

So here’s my outfit. And since this is Juniper James & Thrifting How-Tuesday, everything is, of course, thrifted.

OUTFIT TALLY:

  • Orchid day dress: {Thrift Town} $3.99
  • Black lace tank: {Goodwill}          $0.99
  • Oxford Heels: {Thrift Town}        $2.99
  • Stained Glass Earrings: {Salvation Army }  $1.99
  • Butterfly Belt: {Thrift Town}         $1.99
TOTAL: $11.95
A cute art-fit for under $12? I’ll take it. Hope you’re all having a great week!

THE RUNWAY REPORT: FNO SACRAMENTO

FASHION’S NIGHT OUT.

Last week, we here in Sacramento joined many other cities around the world in celebrating Fashion’s Night Out. There is still quite a buzz from last Thursday’s huge runway show & event that benefitted the UC Davis Children’s Hospital. We love that a whole local shopping center, and community came together to put on such a huge fashion event for a good cause – way to go Sacramento! A big congrats to Mary Kinney of Sister Brother for organizing it.

Highlights of the night included:

  • Wearing a dress made by local designer Jason Powers for Rampant Fashion,
  • Going backstage to see the crazy fabulousness first,
  • Our own Skylar Mundy, MODELING in the show!!
  • Mayor Kevin Johnson being a part of the event,
  • West Sac Mayor Christopher Cabaldon walking the runway,
  • Fabulous shopping til late
  • Seeing EVERYONE in the fashion community, all dressed up (on & off the runway!)
  • Celebrity DJ Joel Madden mixing for the afterparty

…….basically, if you weren’t there, it was a GREAT night.
Here’s some of our shots from the event (and a couple from our friend, Steven Chea).

Hope to see you all at the next big show! XO JJ

THE RUNWAY REPORT

Remember last week when we told you about the Glamour Redefined Fashion Show? It was so great to see so many of you out at the show, and we figured we’d share just a couple of the runway looks for those of you who weren’t able to make it.

. . . . .

When Kari showed up to the fitting at Article Consignment, the owner Abe said, “We hope you’ve been practicing wearing men’s shirts as a skirt… we LOVED your post on JJ, and want you to rock it on the runway.” UUHM, ok. Hadn’t been practicing, but with a few ties & re-ties, we think she pulled it off.

Abe and Lisa (Stylist extraordinaire of Closet Candy) paired a crisp blue & white men’s striped shirt with a satin royal blue ruffled mini dress. Layering over a dress amped up the fun factor : the audience was totally shocked her skirt was a men’s shirt!

. . . . .

Maksim & Jessica: a gorgeous pair ready for a fancy night out on the town.

. . . . . .

This next look started out as a 3XL mumu. Abe & Lisa knotted up the sides, added a flirty goldenrod ruffle belt, and a pop of accessories. 3XL–>XS: WIN.

. . . . . .

Jessica was glowing in this flowing gold look. The floor-length layered ensemble is paired with simple coordinated gold accessories.

. . . . . . .

The final look down the runway had vintage and modern glam: Audrey-esque sunglasses, ruby red pout, and a 50′s scarf on her head like out for a Sunday drive. Oh yeah – and a crazy tiny metallic dress & gold heels.

. . . . .

. . . . .

Thanks again to Article Consignment & Lisa of Closet Candy for putting together such a fun show, and the ladies at Spanish Fly for stellar hair & makeup: All in all, it was a fun night of glamour and  celebrating local fashion.

MIDTOWN YOUR OWN BUSINESS.

LOCAL. Business. Love.

We have such a wonderfully connected community of businesses and creatives here in Sacramento, and this past weekend was a great event showcasing just that. Before I got my official invite to the Midtown Business Association’s Gala, I got a personal invite from a good friend.

We’ve talked about Emily Hunt before here on Juniper James, and for good reason.
As many a shop owner around town will tell you, “Emily is the best makeup artist in Sacramento”. Big shoes, but they fit to glamorous perfection. In addition to being a makeup maestro, she is also master of many other beauty related fields, including her savvy beauty blog, being a top-notch manicurist at The Pedicure Lounge, and the only person I’ll let touch my head with a pair of scissors.

The Gala event had a unique approach to showcasing the creativity and beauty of our community – live artistic demonstrations all night. I was asked to be a part of Emily’s contribution to the night, by allowing her to do my makeup as one of the live demonstrations. Oh, and I get to wear clothes from Krazy Mary’s. With my hair done by Amithyst. SIGN ME UP.

The fun starts the day before the event with a model fitting at Krazy Mary’s. This look was one of our many options… and honestly, there were just way too many cute things to wear. The shop girls, Emily & I debated on 4 complete outfits we loved. It was interesting switching roles, and being the model instead of the stylist – the look we went with (not this one) was Emily’s choice, and it was fun to take on someone else’s persona wardrobe-wise.

Day of : getting pampered & done-up at Amithyst’s Salon.

When it comes to local salons, Sacramento has a lot of awesome to choose from. Amithyst is so talented – my hair looked gorgeous. Chic, current & exciting without being too over the top to wear out for a fancy evening.
Emily CAN do really bold extreme makeup for photoshoots etc, but for this event, she decided to do an edgy going-out look. Here’s the makeup after a whole lotta evening out in it:

With hair by Amithyst, makeup by Emily, and clothes by Krazy Mary,
I felt like the bell of the ball, er, Gala.

Here’s a look at our fun night out!

{Amithyst & Emily.}

{ hair design by Amithyst, makeup/silver by Emily.}

We went with 2 different earrings, with the hair up on the right to accentuate the large (awesome!) feather earring. Both have a matching earring, and are available at Krazy Mary’s.

LOVE this ring! Perfect dark skinny jeans with my own killer gold heels: YES.

{ with two of my favorite girls – Emily & Michelle. }

Style Edge: This mesh tank over the gold one was just right for the night. Thanks to Krazy Mary’s for the fun look and gorgeous accessories!

BOWS NEW HOME!

BOWS & ARROWS OPENS NEW SPACE.

This past Saturday marked the incredibly momentous occasion of Bows and Arrows grand re-opening!! I had been anxiously awaiting this day since…Well, the day they closed their old store on L St.

I had always thought that their new building was a great little spot, even before I knew they were going to moving there. So I was oh so pleasantly surprised when I discovered that it was to be the new home of Bows and Arrows. With the promise of their new location being even better than their last location, I knew it was going to be nothing short of fabutacular.

“Fabutacular” definitely came to mind when I stepped over the threshold–that and :O is pretty much all I could get out for a minute or two.

WHAT a space.

So light and clean and fresh. Good vibes were literally bouncing off the walls…
which were all covered with all kinds of awesome.

Seriously every inch of this place was decked out in amazingness. I honestly didn’t think I would be able to force myself to leave without buying up everything. After I come back from floating up to the heavens on clouds of joy, I was able to peruse the bountiful goodies :)

Although you wouldn’t really be able to tell by the ridiculous weather we’ve been having recently, Summer IS almost here. And Bows and Arrows has lots of Summer gear for you.

Like these bright canvas wedges!

Well, hello, adorable Summer mini dresses. I think we belong together. The main reason I am excited for Summer is all the cute dresses I will soon be wearing :) I will definitely be stocking up on some from here.

They’ve got LOADS of cropped, short sleeve blouses–perfect for the scorching days we’ve got ahead of us.

Once you’ve gotten one of their adorable cropped tops, you will most likely be needing something on the bottom. Well, luck you! They have got shorts a plenty! I really need a good pair of high waist jean shorts, so I will be coming back and selecting some from their vast selection.

Not feeling like Daisy Dukin’ it up? Put a skirt on it, then! I LOVE these floral maxi skirts! So fun!

Obviously when we think Summer, we think one thing: SUN. Shield your looking balls in style with some sweet shades!

The thing that rocked my world the most at the opening? The jewelry. I am a sucker for jewelry…maybe because it’s so shiny and glittery. Either way, I love it. And I loved all the pieces they had there. Some old, some new, some refurbished; all awesome :)

Fellows, don’t think they neglected to include fancy duds for you, too. You are all taken care of also :)

I allowed myself to leave with ONE thing and one thing only from the opening (not an easy task). But I decided on this little floral, flowy number. Very, very happy with it :)

Check out these bevy of beauties that I scouted whilst perusing through the racks:

LOVED this girl’s leather jacket. What a choice piece.

Check out her awesome purse! I am so obsessed with wicker purses right now. I think those will be the accessory of this summer.

Oh, and yes. Those ARE reindeer on her blouse. Yep.

These two blondies were just too cute!

Once…IF you make it past the amazing clothes and jewelry, you find yourself in a wonderful, open space that just begs to be covered with art. At the opening, the walls held the art of San Francisco-based artist Hilary Lynn Pecis. Local blogger Erin Sierchio got a chance to interview the artist (it’s great, of course). You can check out the interview here on Erin’s blog.

You can also check out Hilary’s work on her website. It is pretty cool, I must say.

Once you make your way through the gallery area, you’ll find yourself in Fat Face Cafe:

A sweet little joint that has joined forces with Bows and Arrows, making quite the wonderful union. Craving a sweet summer treat or perhaps a delicious sandwich? Stop by Fat Face and try one of their gourmet sandwiches and a popsicle for dessert! Can you say “yum”?

Right when I thought it couldn’t get any better….you know the drill.

I stepped out the back doors of the building on to their AMAZING patio area. Look at all those smiling faces! There’s not really any way you could NOT be smiling if you were hanging on that patio with some friends, sipping a couple cold ones out of a mason jar. Ahh heaven :)

Bows and Arrows, we LOVE your new space. Thank you so much for opening your doors to us for a night of celebration! It was a blast. We will definitely be frequently…probably more frequently than we should. But you are SO worth it :)

VELO AND VINTAGE.

VELO & VINTAGE 2011 – THE BEHIND THE SCENES LOOK.
by Skylar

Being a part of Juniper James is a crazy ride. Between boutique openings, parties, styling events, fashion shows, styling photoshoots and TV hosts, and all the details entailed… Well loves, we just haven’t had a second to share it all with you!

The three of us kind of barely tolerate each other… lol. And we’ve all just come up for air after the whirlwind of a smashing success that was the CARH Fashion Show Fundraiser (post soon, pics HERE) just in time for our lovely intern Alicia to graduate (congrats slash sadface), and to greet summer with some gusto.
I figured we’d better get re-acquainted, and start where we left you all when the craziness hit:

The 2nd Annual Velo and Vintage fashion show!

I was SO excited to be asked to model in the show. Thank you so much for all of you who came out to see it! For those of you who weren’t able to make it out, don’t fret. We have plenty of photographic evidence of the momentous occasion, and the interweb being the grand place it is,
there is official info and pics HERE
{for a good look at ALL our personal pics from the night, check out our Velo & Vintage Album on JJ’s FB Page.}

SO, before the show we all met at Beatnik Studios on 17th and X St.

All of us models were lucky enough to have our hair and makeup done by the wonderful folks from Marinello School of Beauty - all the models looked fabulous! I pretty much adore getting hair & makeup done by professionals (what girl doesn’t??) and this was awe. some.

And they were all so stinkin’ fun to work with, which obviously, we love.

Adam & Ian – the two fearless males who braved the insane estrogen levels and added their hilarious and charming personalities to the show.

After we were all dolled up, it was off to be photographedwith our bikes by some amazing local photographers!

I had the immense pleasure of shooting with Donald Satterlee, a wonderful local photographer. These are just two of the many pictures that we took.

All the bikes were so interesting and unique! Some of them crazy expensive, and the one pictured below is a one of a kind Oakley bike. Pretty stoked to get to be in pictures with it. The bike shops around here really pulled out all the stops, and the crowd at the show had a LOT to ooh and aah over. College Cyclery, Practical Cycle, Public Bikes, Edible Pedal and City Bicycle Works — you made the show possible, and we loved riding your bikes!

Since May is Bike Month, a bunch of these photos and many more bike themed photographs will be shown at Beatnik this Friday, May 27th (tomorrow!!)
for their Final Friday Arts & Music Showcase.

After the photo shoots, it was business time.
We headed over to Hot Italian and prepped back stage for the show.

What an amazing group of people – EVERYONE was super sweet & fun to hang out with.
We all had such a great time together.

I just want to thank our own Kari Shipman of JJ and Lorena Beightler of Sac Cycle Chic for organizing such an awesome show together and letting us be a part of it.

Before the show, Sactown Magazine was there photographing and interviewing us models back stage. Be sure to pick up the next issue and check out the article!
P.S. Those are some sick moves, Sara. :P

Also HAVE TO thank the wonderful & talented team from Marinello again and their fearless leader (and also one of the gorgeous models in the show) Susan Thompson for the fab hair & makeup. They not only pampered & prettied us at Beatnik beforehand, but jumped in the trenches to switch up the hair & makeup for each model 2 more times during the course of the show. You guys are rockstars! And did I mention that all of us models looked FABULOUS?!

Woo hooo, we did it! The show was a gigantic success.

Big thanks to all the models, Kari, Lorena, Beatnik Studios, Marinello, and Hot Italian for such a great collaboration!

Also, HUGE thanks to all the boutiques who had pieces featured in the show:

Fringe, Sugar Shack, Cuffs, Krazy Mary’sHeart Boutique , Article Consignment, First Edition and Legacy Boutique. Thank you for being amazing local shops and for participating in the event. We love you!

Rik Keller of Sacramento took some great pictures at the show and did a wonderful little article on it as well. You can check it out here.

And remember: Be chic, be unique.

TAKE IT TO THE STREETS

In case you hadn’t heard… on Friday, April 22nd, The Crest Theatre will be premiering

Bill Cunningham New York!

SUPER exciting. I’ve been waiting to see this movie for months!

{img source}

At the event (which benefits the Verge Center for the Arts) there will also be a Trunk Show in the Crest Theatre lobby featuring local boutiques and designers including Bows and Arrows, Modaspia, Crimson & Clover, Thunderhorse, and Babyfloss!

After the movie, there will be a panel discussion with local fashion bloggers RQ Bella & Kerry Dolan of Sac Street Style, Lorena Beightler of Sac Cycle Chic and our very own Kari Shipman of Juniper James. Basically, it is almost going to be too much awesomeness to be contained in just one night. {Visit the FB Event page to RSVP. }

In case you’re not entirely sure what Bill Cunningham New York is all about,
here is a short synopsis and the trailer:

“The ‘Bill’ in question is 80+ New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham. For decades, this Schwinn-riding cultural anthropologist has been obsessively and inventively chronicling fashion trends and high society charity soirées for the Times Style section in his columns “On the Street” and “Evening Hours.” Documenting uptown fixtures (Wintour, Tom Wolfe, Brooke Astor, David Rockefeller—who all appear in the film out of their love for Bill), downtown eccentrics and everyone in between, Cunningham’s enormous body of work is more reliable than any catwalk as an expression of time, place and individual flair. In turn, Bill Cunningham New York is a delicate, funny and often poignant portrait of a dedicated artist whose only wealth is his own humanity and unassuming grace.”

After I saw this trailer, I had two realizations:

1. Bill Cunningham is totally boss and basically my hero.

2. Street fashion is AMAZING and so important in society.

Bill says that the greatest fashion show is on the street, and by golly, I do believe he is right. I’ve started to become much more aware of street fashion as of late. Lookbook.nu is now a daily must for me. It’s so incredible to see people’s street styles from all over the world in one place.

Cecil Beaton said: “Be daring, be different, be impractical, be anything that will assert integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against the play-it-safers, the creatures of the commonplace, the slaves of the ordinary.”

Some people think, “What’s the point? Fashion is just materialistic garbage that everyone buys into it.” But the fact  is, everyone wears clothes everyday… unless you belong to a nudist colony.

Like the man in the beginning of the trailer said, we are all blank canvasses when we get up in the morning, and we all paint ourselves. Some of us choose to paint ourselves to blend in. Some of us don’t really care what we wear. But whether you’re spending hours perfecting your outfit every day of just throwing on jeans and a T-shirt, you ARE a part of the fashion scene and you do have personal style.

Bill was quoted in the trailer saying: “The wider world that perceives fashion as a frivolity that should be done away with–the point is that fashion is the armor to survive the reality of everyday life. I don’t think you could do away with it. It would be like doing away with civilization.”

I couldn’t agree with this more. Can you imagine how boring life would be without fashion. I am so thankful that there is someone like Bill Cunningham documenting and preserving such an integral part of our culture. I can’t WAIT to see the whole movie. I hope to see all of you there!

The trunk show starts at 6:30. The movie will start at 8:00.
Tickets are $15 general, $12 for seniors and students. For more info,

And you know, just because we’re not in NY, doesn’t mean we don’t have awesome street style here, too. For great street fashion right here in Sac, be sure to check out Sacramento’s own street style blog.

Well, HELLO my loves -
It’s stinkin CRAZY TOWN at Juniper James lately !

The JJ girls have recently been suffering from TMGS (Too Much Good Sh…Stuff). There is just not enough time in the day to go to the events, style photoshoots, plan big fashion shows, be out in the community supporting local AND make big posts with everyone’s info, pics, name & address to get you all there to join us. *whew* I’m worn out just telling you about it.

So, instead of taking half the day making a post about it, or just not sharing the love (NOT an option) – we’re starting a little something new: video. I know, we’re a little late to the VLOG (video blog) party, but at least we’re here with our best party dress on. Or in this case, our favorite lemon yellow skinny jeans.

A LIVING LEGACY

Spring is finally here, the weather is gorgeous, I’m finally able to show some skin again–
what more could I ask for? A new boutique in Midtown? Yes, please!

. . . . .

On Friday, April 1st, Legacy Boutique came into the world.

At 2418 K Street
8 lbs 7oz
Born to the proud parent of Debbie Milanova

And I, Skylar, like an excited relative in the delivery room, was honored to be one of the many wonderful people to be present at the shop’s big debut.

Kari + Skylar: opposites attract, right? :) And no, we didn’t plan our floral/blackness.
We’re not THAT dorky…at least not yet.

Some lovely & influential women here in Sac: Kari with the absolutely effervescent owner of Legacy, Debbie (center), and Mary Kawano owner of Krazy Mary’s & Sugar Shack. Debbie worked for Mary for a number of years in her shops, and Mary is obviously thrilled for her friend & this bright shiny new venture. It was great to see a bunch of other boutique owners come out & support Debbie – really says a lot about the collaborative spirit here in Midtown.

Ooh-la-la! As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by this wonderful table of goodies.
Where to begin?! So many goodies, so little time!

Everyone gravitates toward different items. Kari (obviously) likes belts, and they have a bunch of different colors of this wide fuzzy rosebud one. I fell in love with this gilded tapestry purse. It’s like a fabulous grandma in a bag… It doesn’t really make sense, but roll with it.

We chatted & shopped with our friend Nikki from Little Bits of NikNak. As a fellow blogger, she of course wrote all about it – check out her new stuff & review of Legacy.

{All of us Juniper James girlies. <3 Jeannine, Alicia, Kari & I. }

Love cloche hats, but don’t want your noggin to suffocate in stuffy felt or wool? Debbie has these adorable straw cloche hats that are perfect for Spring and Summer!

And if you’re looking for some…not so discreet accessories, she’s got those too.
I loved the wooden bracelets.

They can go with so many things and really work all seasons.

Kind of crushing on some of this dreamy jewelry…

I was oh so pleased when I discovered her diverse collection of ginormous, dangly earrings like these ^^ (my current obsession). Too much fabulousness for my brain to process.

These were my favorite pair by far. SO Edie Sedgwick. Definitely a statement piece.

The adorable Jeannine looked downright well, adorable in this sparkly black skirt.

I loved this crocheted clutch with its carved handle.

She has some really cute purses in there now.
This black, beaded tassel purse was one of my favorites.

This adorable ruffled, jersey dress would be perfect for a night out around Midtown in spring or summer with some leggings.

I know we’re all excited about the warmer weather, but it does still get a bit chilly at night sometimes.
This oversized light knit is perfect for mild spring nights. The bold pattern is fun for throwing over something basic.

I have been looking for a cute pair of white lace leggings to wear with sundresses!
These will definitely fit the bill.

VINTAGE.

I like that Legacy has a good vintage selection too. This little number is sparkly, floral and has pearls and shoulder pads. Some things are so ugly that they are fabulous. This is one of those things.

These flowy, 80′s tunics might not scream style out from the rack, but pair them with a cute belt,
leggings and heels and you have got an original, rockin look for Summer.

Too bad Gaga wasn’t at the opening! Debbie had the perfect dress for her :)
I don’t know if I would be daring enough to sport this chartreuse contraption of a dress in broad day light to pick up some groceries, but I think it would be pretty stinking awesome for a party or a photo shoot.

Just when I thought Legacy couldn’t possibly get any more awesome, I discovered that they also have menswear! When it comes to boutiques in Sacramento, there isn’t a huge selection of choices for men, so we’re happy to have another stylish place for the men in our lives to get outfitted.  I loved how Debbie styled these two outfits, she really has all the bases covered. And I know any guy coming here to shop will get some good fashion input. If only all men were just fashionable all on their own. *sigh*

In summary, no matter who you are or what you’re looking for–new, vintage, or something in a league of its own–you will find it at Legacy. Thank you so much, Debbie, for opening up such a great boutique! I will definitely be back. When you check it out, tell Debbie that Skylar & the Juniper James girls heart her BIG time.

Be chic, be unique.
