STYLIST DIARIES / THINGS I LOVE THURSDAY

HARAJUKU DO YOU LOVE?

Well, HELLO JJ loves –

I’m hoping you read my post yesterday on the upcoming night of awesome fashion that is the Bill Cunningham documentary viewing/trunkshow/blogger panelYou’re coming, right??

In the theme of yesterday’s revelries…my perusing of and obsession with street fashion has lead me to the mecca of street fashion: Harajuku.

Harajuku is the world famous district in Japan where boys and girls alike come dressed in usually pretty outrageous outfits and promenade down the streets. In Harajuku, the streets really are runways. And on these runways, anything goes.

I am pretty much in a Harajuku phase myself, I have been on the lookout for perfect pieces to create my ensembles, and this past Sunday at the Antique Faire with Kari, we found …. well you’ll see.

So much fun. And yes, please, if you have enough creativity to put something that awesome together, wear it ANYWHERE.

Here are some pictures of some of my favorite Harajuku street styles:

This isn’t for a parade, festival or party. They really do wear this in everyday life. Awesome right?

What I love about street fashion is it’s right there in front of you – it’s real, tangible, relatable. It’s not some paper thin model photoshopped out the wazoo. Street fashion is what makes our world colorful, vibrant, unique and beautiful. Even if I wasn’t in a harajuku phase, I’d still be inspired by people living & dressing out loud like this.

People might mock the goths and the punks and the hippies and the gangsters and the hipsters and the “weirdos”, but just think about what a bland world it would be if none of them existed. It takes a lot of guts to wear something different. It can be pretty overwhelming at times. So when I see people like the Harajuku girls/guys seriously not giving a flip what anyone thinks and wearing whatever they want, no matter how crazy it is, I really want to thank them for having the courage to be different.

Pretty wild, huh?

I really do believe that when you are dressed up, even if the outfit is just mildly out of the ordinary, you become a living, breathing, moving piece of art that spreads beauty to the people around you. When I see someone who looks really nice or just interesting, it makes me really happy. I always try to compliment those people.

I’ve actually started loving street style even more than runway fashion. Clothes in magazines and on runways are really beautiful and do inspire me a lot. But on the streets, you see originality and style personality. And that inspires me even more. And as you know, just because we don’t live in Harajuku central, doesn’t mean we don’t have awesome street style here, too. For great street fashion right here in Sac, be sure to check out Sacramento’s own street style blog.

And feel free to also drop by my personal blog: Let It Reign!

  1. I love it! I love how they DO look like art… like beautiful funny dolls. It takes work and creativity to dress like that and they have lots of both! I too am inspired by mags and runway but I love how streetstyle reinterprets it and makes it real… it’s kind of my dressing philosophy! you are super cute in the video! ROCK that tutu!!!
