WEARABLE WEDNESDAY – by anna

Back in Black.

I work in a professional office, which requires a professional wardrobe.  As such, I get bored with the same basic conservative outfit and I’m always looking for ways to change it up a bit.   On top of that, of course, I try to make sure that my clothes can be worn in different ways for different occasions.  This week I wanted to get more use out of my black slacks.  Everyone has a pair and I bet most of you wouldn’t think about wearing them outside of a formal environment but you totally can!

I am a firm believer in the theory that wearing all black is chic statement.  This outfit is a fairly conservative work choice.  Had I chosen to wear black shoes it would not have been too boring considering the mixture of textures I have going on here, however, many do not pay attention to that kind of stuff and I likely would have looked like just another person downtown after work.  In order to spruce up the outfit a little I chose red patent leather heels.  The pop of color took this outfit from fairly average to something that someone might look twice at.  And honestly, who doesn’t feel great, maybe even a little Dorothy-esque, when their wearing shiny red shoes?

Incorporating touches of the 80’s is back in style this year and yes ladies, I pegged my pants.  While I didn’t see pegged pants per say on the runways I did see many a harem pant which to me looks a lot like a pegged leg.  At this point I am not willing to go out buy said pants, so I thought I’d try pegging my slacks to see how it looks.  Though I didn’t think I would like it, when I paired them with a basic grey tee and an off-white blazer I actually surprised myself with a new outfit that I will be wearing this season.  Not only do I like the pegged leg, I also like the combination of an almost sporty look contrasted with a traditional blazer; this outfit could probably be worn to work, happy hour later and even a casual get together on the weekend.  Score!

I’ve always liked the styles of the 20’s and 30’s, especially the newsboy hats and the knickers that men wore with them.  As an ode to this style I used my black slacks and tucked them into my favorite boots.  Because the pants are not tight they bunch out a little at the top of the boot creating more of a knicker-like look.  Of course I had to wear my newsboy hat and decided to go with a basic white tee and a 3/4 inch sleeve blue jacket.  I thought this was a great casual choice that could be worn out to coffee, shopping, lunch, or any informal activities you may have going on.

I hope this inspires you to take a second look at what you’ve got in your closet – there’s always more than one way to wear what you already have!

Do you have a piece you just can’t figure out the best way to wear? Let me know, maybe I can help! What do you have, love and wear every which-way?

Let me know if you end up wearing one of my suggestions & stay tuned for more ideas in next week’s Wearable Wednesday article!
